Artist Interview: Valerie Timmons
Kentucky native, Valerie Timmons, is inspired by the natural world. She creates bold, confident paintings that show us why. She is also a lifetime practicing photographer who uses the camera to capture images of the life around her home.

RS: How do you find balance between exploring new ideas and refining existing ones in your creative practice?
VT: I follow my gut (and my muse). Right now, I'm extremely burnt out on a technique I've been using for over a decade, so I'm exploring ways to loosen up.

RS: What role does curiosity play in fueling your creativity?
VT: Curiosity is foundational to my art practice, especially where new techniques and tools are concerned. Subject matter stays pretty constant, but I love finding new ways to express my reaction to it.

RS: How do you handle self-doubt or imposter syndrome as a creative individual?
VT: I have to admit I'm past self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I've experienced enough validation that I've put them behind me and learned to trust my intuition.
RS: Can you describe a time when collaboration with others led to a breakthrough in your creative process?
VT: I've never collaborated on my visual art . . . performing arts are another story.

RS: How do you capture fleeting moments of inspiration before they vanish?
VT: I send myself emails or make notes or take pictures on my phone if I'm nowhere near my easel or desktop. If I'm near my desktop, I draft things in Photoshop before committing them to canvas or print.

RS: Tell us your 3 favorite things about you and your art!
VT: I'm unafraid to try new things. My work has grown in sophistication. Getting to know fellow artists has been a gift.
